The Big Smoke is a black and white photography series shot over fifteen years of walking London — the South Bank, Hyde Park, Westminster, the Thames at different hours. Not the postcard city, not the tourist angles. The version you find when you slow down and look at what's actually there: street performers being laughed at, deckchairs in rows, a book market under a bridge, fog swallowing the Eye.

All photographs in this series were taken by Klara Bäckström. The series takes its name from the city's oldest nickname — earned honestly, still earned.
